How to Calculate Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

A multi-semester weighted grade converter supporting major international university grading scales worldwide.

GPA / SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)

Measures your performance in a single semester or term. It represents the weighted average of letter grades earned in courses taken during that specific period.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

Measures your overall academic standing across all semesters combined throughout your entire degree program, weighted by total credit hours completed.

Global University Grading Scales Supported

  • United States, Pakistan & Canada (4.0 Scale): A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0.
  • India (10.0 Scale / UGC): Standard 10-point scale commonly converted to percentage via (CGPA × 9.5).
  • Australia (7.0 Scale): High Distinction (7), Distinction (6), Credit (5), Pass (4).
  • Germany (1.0 – 5.0 Bavarian Scale): Inverted system where 1.0 represents Very Good (Sehr Gut) and 5.0 is Fail.

The Credit-Weighted CGPA Formula

You cannot simply average semester GPAs together because semesters often have differing numbers of total credit hours:

CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits Completed)

Example: Semester 1 (GPA 3.8, 15 credits = 57 quality points) + Semester 2 (GPA 3.2, 18 credits = 57.6 quality points). Total points = 114.6 ÷ 33 credits = 3.47 CGPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding CGPA calculations, credit weighting, and grade conversions.

GPA (or Semester GPA / SGPA) measures your academic performance for a single academic term or semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) measures your overall cumulative academic performance across all completed semesters combined throughout your degree.

CGPA is a credit-weighted average: Multiply each semester's GPA by its total credit hours, add those totals together, and divide by the total number of credit hours completed across all semesters. Formula: CGPA = Σ(GPA × Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits).

This calculator supports the 4.0 scale (United States, Pakistan, Canada), 10.0 scale (India / UGC / CBSE), 7.0 scale (Australia), UK Honors system, and the German Bavarian (1.0–5.0) grading scale.

Credit hours reflect the academic workload of courses and semesters. A semester with 18 credit hours has a greater proportional impact on your final cumulative CGPA than a semester with only 12 credit hours.

Yes. Earning high GPAs in courses carrying higher credit hours in upcoming semesters will gradually pull up your cumulative CGPA.
